When I began reading, "The Center Cannot Hold" about what it was like to have schizophrenia, I couldn't believe that the author, a Yale educated law professor, was the same woman as the subject. Everything I knew about schizophrenia up to that point made it seem impossible for someone with the illness to hold down a job, much less have a successful career.
Elyn has a Ph.D. in psychoanalytic science and a law degree, which has helped her become a leading expert in mental health policy. She's been awarded the MacArthur Genius Grant and created the Saks Institute for Mental Health Law, Policy, and Ethics.
She isn't the only person leading an incredible life while living with schizophrenia. But whereas some "high functioning" people keep their serious mental illness to themselves, Elyn is out in the world helping people understand it.
